Alexander Axelrad, M.D. Joins Crozer Health as Chief of Trauma Surgery

Crozer Health announced that Alexander Axelrad, M.D., FACS, FCCM has joined the health system as Chief of Trauma Surgery.

The Crozer Regional Trauma Center at Crozer-Chester Medical Center is the only trauma center in Delaware County, treating more than 2,400 trauma patients every year. Dr. Axelrad leads the multidisciplinary team to diagnose and treat traumatic injuries. Since 1987, the Crozer Regional Trauma Center has met the high standards of care required to earn its designation as a Regional Level II Trauma Center by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.

Throughout his career, Dr. Axelrad has assumed various leadership positions in Trauma and Critical Care. Most recently, he was Trauma Medical Director at Mount Sinai-South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, NY. Previously, he was Chief of Trauma/Surgical Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, NY and Trauma Medical Director for AtlantiCare in Atlantic City, NJ.

His academic appointments include Assistant Professor of Surgery at SUNY-Stony Brook School of Medicine in Stony Brook, NY, Assistant Professor of Surgery and Program Director, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, NJ, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Dr. Axelrad received his medical degree from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico. He completed his Surgical Internship and Residency at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where he was Chief Surgical Resident, and completed clinical fellowships in Surgical/Critical Care/Trauma from the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. 

Dr. Axelrad is board certified in General Surgery with a subspecialty in Surgical Critical Care. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM), is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and American Association for the Surgery on Trauma (AAST).

His areas of expertise include critical care management of severe traumatic brain injury, bleeding and clotting, severe hepatic injury, mechanical ventilation in acute respiratory failure, damage control surgery, and chest wall stabilization surgery for severe chest injury.
